Frequently Asked Questions after Eye Surgery
|
|
When do I start the eye drops? Start all drops as soon as you get home from surgery.
PLEASE follow the written
instructions provided upon discharge.
I was told not to rub my eye immediately after surgery. Will I ever be
able to rub my eye again? Although it is very important not to rub your eye
as you heal from surgery, once healing is complete (about six weeks) you
can safely resume gentle, reasonable amounts of occasional eye
rubbing.
What can I do to protect my eye?
You may wear
the protective eye shield at night for first 5 days. Dark eyeglasses may
be worn during the daytime, especially outdoors, to avoid any discomfort
that you may have from bright light and also to prevent any injury to
eye.
When can I wash my hair?
It is safe to wash your hair immediately
after the operation, but do not get your eye wet for 2 weeks after
surgery. Wash your hair with the head tilted backwards to avoid any water
splashing into the eye.
Can I wash or shower?
It is safe to bathe but for the first few days, avoid splashing water
directly into the eye. You may use a clean, soft, wet towel to wipe your
face. Shaving is permitted after the operation.
When can I play sport again? It is safe
to return to vigorous sport about 2 weeks after surgery. Lifting heavy
weights should probably wait a little longer (perhaps 4 weeks). It is
usually safe to swim two weeks after your operation if you wear goggles,
and are very careful putting them on. Swimming is generally safe without
goggles four weeks after your operation. Normal daily activities
including walking, reading and watching television may be resumed
immediately after your operation.
Can I wear eye make up? Avoid eye
makeup for 6 weeks.
How
soon can I fly after eye surgery?
There are no restrictions on flying after
eye surgery, except under very rare circumstances, which your surgeon
will tell you about. It is safe even relatively soon after the
procedure. If you feel your eye a little dry and irritable this is
because of the air conditioning.
What about Sex? You can
resume your sex life a week or two after the operation.
Can I eat normally? There are
no dietary restrictions and you may take your routine diet. However,
avoid constipation by taking high fibre diet and plenty of fluids.
When can I drive again? This
depends on your vision in the other eye and the vision in the operated
eye without glasses. You should ask specifically when you can start to
drive.
