Sack Wash Out

What is a Lacrimal sac washout?

A sac washout is usually performed if the tear ducts are thought to be blocked.

This procedure is performed in an outpatient clinic and takes approx 10 minutes. A local anaesthetic drop can be instilled prior to the procedure to reduce any discomfort.

The small hole (punctum) in the inner corner of the lower eyelid is dilated using a special instrument, the tear ducts are then washed out with sterile saline (salt water), using  a syringe with a small, hollow tube attached to it. The consultant or ophthalmic nurse can assess if the tear duct is blocked by observing how the saline drains through the tear ducts.

There are usually no specific instructions following this procedure; however you will be advised by the consultant or nurse.
