This is a disease that affects people of all ages. It is characterised by eyes that have a burning itchy, gritty sensation due to the inadequate lubrication of the ocular surface.
Normally tears keep the eye moist and comfortable. Sometimes the eye stops producing adequate tears because of age-related disease, due to infection or inflammation, or secondary to other generalised conditions like arthritis, skin diseases and certain drugs - HRT may cause dry eyes.
