Floaters are shapes which people can see drifting across their vision. They can be variable appearing from small dots to irregular shapes.
As the vitreous ages at the back of the eye a protein called collagen becomes visible in strands as they swirl gently as the eye moves.
You should not be concerned about seeing one or two floaters, particularly if you have had them for some time.
You should seek our advice if:
- There is a sudden increase in the number of floaters
- If you experience flashing lights
You should seek urgent advice to ensure you are not having a retinal detachment.
Our experienced ophthalmic nurses at the clinic will deal promptly with your immediate concerns and liaise with the ophthalmic consultant.
