Trabeculectomy: Surgery for Glaucoma

Laser Trabeculoplasty

This is a procedure using laser which is directed onto the trabecular meshwork. The laser burns produce scaring which then stretches the meshwork, thereby widening the drainage holes. The procedure requires on average 40 to 80 laser applications taking up to 30 minutes to perform. It has the effect of increasing fluid drainage in the eye and lowering the intra ocular pressure.

Trabeculectomy

The traditional procedure for glaucoma is called a Trabeculectomy. This can be described as filtering surgery. This procedure involves removing a piece of tissue from the Sclera (the tough white coat of the eye ball) which creates a flap valve in the trabecular Meshwork (the mesh through which the fluid drains). The aqueous within the eye drains out under the scleral flap raising an area of the conjunctiva which is called a "Bleb".
