Meibomion cyst (chalazion) |
A cyst is caused by an infection in one or more of the little glands attached directly to the base of the eyelash. They can resolve with hot bathing and antibiotic ointments.
Surgery will only be required if there's a residual hard lump in the lid
after weeks of treatment, or if the cyst is very large. Then, the cyst can
be emptied by incising and curetting (scraping) it under local anaesthetic
with drops, and sometimes an injection into the skin of the eyelid.
