The visual field is the total area where objects can be seen in the peripheralVision while the eye is focused on a central point.

What is a visual field test

A visual field test is a method of measuring an individuals scope of vision, wither central, peripheral or combined field of each eye.

What is the test used for?

Visual field testing is used to detect any early (or late) signs of glaucoma, damage to optic nerve, and damage to the retina.

How long does the test take?

Each eye is tested separately. You should allow 15-45 minutes to have a whole test, depending on the test requested by the doctor.

Visual Field test for Driving?

A driving licence visual field test takes 5-10minutes. Most of these test are carried out at the request of the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Swansea.

What happens during a visual field test?

• Visual Field Tests do not cause any pain or discomfort. One eye will be tested whilst the other eye is covered.
• You will be asked to sit in front of a piece of equipment with your chin on a rest and your forehead against a bar. In front of you will be a yellow light for you to focus on constantly.
• It is very important to keep looking at the yellow fixation light. Do not look around for the other flashing lights.
• You will be given a response button to hold. It should be pressed and released whenever you see a test flash light.

Lights will flash, one at a time, above, below and at either side. some of these lights will be bright and some will be dim. Press the button when you see one of these flashes.
