Understanding Your Eyes

The eyes work like a camera, focusing light rays onto the retina to create an image.

Cornea

The clear cover at the front of the eye that lets light in and also bends the light rays

Iris

Coloured ring that opens and closes to adjust the level of light entering the eye

Pupil

Hole in the Iris through which light enters the eye

Lens

Clear structure within the eye that further focuses light rays onto the retina

Retina

Lining at the back of eye that receives images focused by the lens

Optic nerve

Nerve at the back of eye that carries images from the retina to the brain

Ciliary muscles

These muscles change the shape of the lens to focus images on the retina
